CHUCK WATT OF STEUBENVILLE

Coach Watt spent 23 years as head basketball coach at Steubenville High School, where he had graduated in 1945. He later earned his degree from Steubenville College. During his coaching career at Steubenville High, his teams won 350, losing 149, for a winning percent of 70.1!

The Big Red were Ohio Valley Athletic Conference champions eight times in 1971, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1986 and 1990. He was District 5 Coach of the Year those same years. His teams won sectional championships in 1970, 1971, 1978, 1980, 1981, and 1983 through 1990, for a total of twelve. They were district champs in 1970, 1971, 1985 and 1990. In 1971 and again in 1990, Chuck was Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Outstandingly, two of his teams were defeated only twice, three teams had only one defeat, and one had an entire undefeated regular season.

From 1954 to 1960, he served as an assistant football coach, and from 1963 to 1968 as ends and defensive coach. He also served as head baseball coach for a decade (1965-75), with a winning record of 1974-90-3. His summers were occupied as American Legion Baseball Coach. He was an assistant from 1957-82, and during that time won the state championship in 1964, 1978 and 1979. He became head coach in 1983, winning state championships in 1984 and 1989, with a record of 367 wins and 104 losses.

Back in his senior year at Steubenville College, he was chosen to finish the season as head coach. The team was 3-5 at the time, but they finished at 14-8. For this the team received "The Most Improved Team in the Country" award as determined by the Dick Dunkel National Rating System.

One of seven children, Chuck committed his life to teaching and coaching. He taught his players sound fundamentals and a feel for the game. His success on the court and the field were matched by his commitment in the classroom and in his church. Often he used his own funds to help students, whether athletes or not. Today he spends much of his time as a volunteer coach at Steubenville High School.
