2018 – Dave Close

The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association is proud to announce that Dave Close of Stow-Munroe Falls High School is the recipient of the 2018 Paul Walker Award. The Paul Walker Award is presented annually by the OHSBCA to an active coaching member of the association who has made significant contributions to high school basketball. The award is named in honor of the late Paul Walker, the longtime coach of Middletown High School. At the time of his retirement, he had the most wins as a boys basketball coach in Ohio High School Basketball history.

Dave Close is a 1980 graduate of Taylor University, IN, where he played basketball for four years and ran track for two. Upon graduating from Taylor with a bachelor’s degree in Math/Systems/Education, he stayed at Taylor to serve as an assistant coach under NAIA Hall of Fame Coach Paul Patterson. After two years at Taylor, Dave accepted a graduate assistant coaching position at Kent State under Jim McDonald. At Kent, he earned a Master’s Degree in the Social Psychology of Sport. Dave followed those four years of college coaching with a one-year junior varsity coaching stint at Maple Heights High School under Biff Lloyd.
